What to ask your Plastic Surgeon???

Important questions to ask before committing to Plastic Surgery for the New Year.

Is your Plastic Surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
  • Do not stop here! Check to see is that board is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
  • You may ask why? It is important because you can ensure that the Physician has completed a minimum of 5 years of surgical training, has experience in all plastic surgery procedures, conducts procedures in accredited medical facilities, follows a strict code of ethics, and participates in continuing medical education requirements.

How much experience does your Plastic Surgeon have conducting this specific procedure?
  • More experience will give you the confidence to have faith that you are in good hands.
  • Ask the Physician for before and after photos; pictures will also build you confidence in making your decision.

Can I see your Medical License?
  • A big “No, No” in this field is the failure to display the Doctors medical license in the office. Whether is it displayed in the consultation room, doctors office, or waiting room area, it MUST be visible. If not make sure you ask about!

Has any of the Doctors patients experienced complications?
  • Be forward. Even with the most experienced physicians, complications can arise in the operating room. Ask the doctor for examples of any patients who experienced a complication from your desired procedure and how the Doctor resolved the issue.

What are the Doctors Medical Facility Affiliations?
  • Inside scoop. Physicians are most commonly affiliated with Hospitals. What you should ask is whether they are affiliated with out-patient facilities (a fancy word for a same day surgery facility). Depending on the procedure, out-patient facilities are a cost saving and beneficial option for many patients, as they have proven to have a lower infection rate compared to hospitals.
  • In saying this MAKE SURE you do your research on that specific facility. Check for infection control reports, sitings, and certifications.

What are the Medical evaluations that need to take place, in preparation for my procedure?
